Sunday Salon: 3 October 2010

The Sunday Salon.com

October - how did that happen?  I love Fall but I am dismayed by how fast the year is going by!  Although I wish time would slow down, I am looking forward to some things I have planned for the end of the year.  Each year, some friends and I take a big trip over the holidays - last year we toured India and this year we are heading to Thailand.  Thailand has been on my "must visit" list for quite some time so I am really excited to be going this year - I just booked my flights!

September in Review
I have been reading a lot more of late but my reviews have slowed down - I need to get into a routine so that I finish them in batches and post over the following week instead of trying to write them during the week.  With work, I just can't get to them during the week - I need stress relief which books provide but I cannot read and write reviews in the limited time available during the week.  So, for October, I am going to try a review writing schedule  - let's see how it goes!

Here is what I reviewed this month (click to link to the reviews):

The Lies We Told
Unnamed (audiobook)
Home For Broken Hearts
A Summer Affair

Reading Plans

Callapidder Days is hosting Fall Into Reading where participants state what they plan to read during the event period (Sept 22 -Dec 20).  I participated in Spring Into Reading and although I didn't read everything I had planned, it was fun to look forward for the season.  My list for Fall will consist mostly of books needed to complete the many Challenges that will be closing out by the end of the year:

Midnight's Children: A NovelThe Corrections: A NovelThe Caliph's House: A Year in CasablancaLadies CoupeBombay Time: A NovelBroken VersesFamily MattersThe Piano Teacher: A NovelThe White House Doctor: My Patients Were Presidents - A MemoirSerious Men: A Novel
Night (Oprah's Book Club)A Confederacy of DuncesCatch-22The Time Traveler's WifeBlack, White & Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self
Life of Pi Lost Lustre: A New York MemoirThe Financial Lives of the Poets: A Novel (P.S.)

Wow - I have a lot of reading to do! But I am looking forward to all these books!  What are your reading plans this weekend, month, or season?

  1. I always try and write my reviews in batches, because otherwise they don't get done. I hope you enjoy Confederacy of Dunces. That is my favorite book ever!

  2. Writing reviews during the week is hard for me also. I try to block out time on Saturdays to write them and schedule for the upcoming weeks. As of late, my Saturdays have been filled with other things and I haven't been able to write reviews. I want to go back to writing my review after the finishing the book and before I start my next one. I just haven't had the chance to do so yet. Finding the balance of personal life, work, reading and blogging has been quite the challenge for me this year.

  3. Thailand?? How exciting! Good luck with the writing schedule - I'll be interested to hear how it works out. I seem to be having trouble getting to reviews lately, too. You've got some great reading ahead!

  4. I also have a difficult time writing reviews during the week. I had been doing them all on the weekend during "naptime". Unfortunately the little one has decided that he no longer wants to nap. I'm still working on the balance.

Enjoy October, it snuck up on me too.

  5. That are a lot of books to finish! I don't think I could read with that kind of pressure. But there are some wonderful books on that list as well as many that I want to read sometime!

  7. WOW!!! Sounds like you do a lot of fun traveling! We are supposed to go with my MIL to Thailand one day since that's where she's from... (my husband is half-Thai) but don't know if that will happen.

You've got a lot of reading to do, lol!

  8. Balance is hard to achieve - I certainly can't do it! I am still compiling my Fall list, if I tried to read everything needed to finsih all the challenges I joined, I would need to send my kids away for adoption and quit my job - so am thinking I'll end up giving some of the chalenges up instead!

  9. I'm a batch reviewer, too. Except lately, I sit down on the weekends and all I seem to accomplish is a single review. I was hoping to be more productive in the fall, but it's not happening yet.
I've never had a desire to travel to Thailand...but I will look forward to hearing about your trip! Are you going to read any books set in Thailand to get you in the mood?

  11. Thailand sounds wonderful!

I've been having a hard time with review writing myself. All the busy things going on in my life make me want to read, but not necessarily review. I've got lots to catch up on.

Looks like you have some fantastic reading planned! Enjoy.

  12. Great Fall into Reading list! Thailand sounds fun.

I want to get ahead on some of my blog tours: get the books read and reviews scheduled before they're due. That's my new goal anyway!

  15. I had a Catch-22 dream last night! I'll be curious which way you fall - into the love it or hate it camp? What an impressive list you have lined up. Have fun and have a great trip!

  17. Thailand? My friends go there every year because they just fell in love with it when they were there for work for a few weeks. I've been reading but struggling to keep up with blogging for the past month. I've never gotten ahead before on books to review and now I can't find time to review them!

  18. Good luck with a review writing schedule! I often want to do something like that, but then end up not being able to stick with it. I feel like having a blogging schedule would make things easier though.

  19. Wow, you have some good books there. Night remains one of my favorite books ever after reading it as a teen. Life of Pi was wonderfully imaginative. The Time Travelers Wife plot construction blew me away even if the protagonist struck me as a bit sleazy.

Like you, I have a backlog of novels and borrowed ARCs that I’ve read but haven’t reviewed. I’m also busy during the week working and driving my kids places. My weekends are only marginally less hectic. My next review post in 2 weeks will have 4 books. I’m currently reading Lily King’s latest novel, Father of the Rain. She writes beautifully. I’ll be interviewing her too for my blogger book review club early next year. Posting weekly is all I can manage but it does mean that my reviews lag behind my reading. I do try to get ARC reviews up close to release dates.

Have fun in Thailand! That’s on my list of places I’d love to visit, but it will wait until we move to Japan for a year (in six years – my husband’s next sabbatical.)
