As I was writing my review for The Reeducation of Cherry Truong, I was reminded of my trip to Vietnam a few years ago.  Shortly after we arrived, our tuk-tuk got stuck behind this moped carting pork.  It is an image I won't soon forget!  We knew we weren't at home anymore!

 Christmas 2010 - Letter to Santa

I am looking forward to Christmas and was going over pics from past years.  My nephew wrote this  cute note to Santa two years ago when he was about 6. Guess those notepads in the hotels do get used!

I hope all my US readers had a lovely Thanksgiving!  Yesterday was a beautiful day and on the way home the sky was gorgeous as the sun was setting.  I could have done without the powerlines in this shot but I was pulled over on the side of the road trying to capture this.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

If you follow me on Twitter (@booksnyc) you will likely have noticed a plethora of #Sandy tweets - it has been a tough week here in NYC in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. I am very fortunate in that I only lost power briefly (hence all the tweeting) but it is overwhelming to see the dire circumstances others have been left in by the storm. I was excited to see that 2 locations in Manhattan were collecting donations of goods for devastated Breezy Point. and I was happy to pull together a bag of warm clothes and some toiletries to donate. It's not much but it feels good to do something.  Please keep these families in your thoughts and prayers.

I am dog sitting for two weeks while my parents are on vacation; meet my new roommate - Angel.  She is a 14+ year old, spoiled Maltese but too cute to say "No" to  . . . so she is now running my house!

The Fund for Park Avenue hosts a series of scuplture displays on the avenue throughout the year.  Currently, there are sculptures by Niki de Saint Phalle .

 I took this picture on a trip to Scotland with my Dad in 2009. Born and raised in Scotland, my Dad moved to the US in his twenties. This was taken in the village of Pennan, a picturesque town where the movie Local Hero was filmed.

 In the fall, some friends and I took a walking tour of Greenwich Village and, although I had seen much of what was on the tour over the years I have lived here, Grove Court was a surprise.  This cul-de-sac has a line of federal style homes set back from the street and behind a gate.  You can read more about the history of the spot at the Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation.

Orchids - NY Botanical Gardens Orchid Show, 2011

 Each year, the New York Botanical Gardens hosts an orchid show and there is literally a riot of all variety of orchids in a green house.  If you are in the area, the orchid show is going on now - for more info check out their website.

Parade of Monks: Phnom Penh, Cambodia

While in Cambodia, I would see monks with these orange, yellow or maroon robes walking throughout the city and became obsessed with photographing them. There was something about their brightly colored robes against the background of the street that made a striking photo.

Me- NY City Marathon - 1998

Tomorrow will be the 41st running of the New York City Marathon and more than 45,000 runners will take to the streets of New York City's 5 boroughs to conquer the 26.2 mile distance. I have run NYC three times and each times the crowds made the event for me - especially when I hit the dreaded wall at Mile 20 in upper Manhattan - their cheering and encouragement spurred me to push on.

I will be out tomorrow doing my part to cheer on this year's participants because I know just how much it means. Of course, I get something out of cheering too - inspiration. As Kathrine Switzer said, "If you are losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon." Good luck to all the runners!
