Sunday Salon: February 16, 2014

The Sunday Salon.com

The scene: 10 AM Sunday morning, inside looking out (and considering my hydrangea which has yet to fall victim to my black thumb!)

Reading: Still reading Winter Garden  - I have barely read in print this week at all - not sure what happened because I certainly have time on my hands but somehow kept getting distracted (probably by what you will see in the "watching" prompt!) I did finish Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe in audio  - this book pleasantly surprised me.  I realized I had some preconceived notions about the actor which are likely wrong. I think my next audio pick will be Five Days at Memorial by Sheri Fink - I have seen great reviews.

Blogging: This week I posted my review of While We Were Watching Downton Abbey by Wendy Wax (audio) - this was light, enjoyable listen with beloved Downton as a backdrop. I am still moving through reviews from last year but starting to get caught up. I also posted "Books with HEART" for Valentine's Day which included a sampling of books with "heart" in the title.

Watching: Probably too much TV! I gave House of Cards another try this week and now am completely sucked in!  With the arrival of Season 2 on Friday, I have had more than enough episodes to keep me going. I also went to see Gravity this weekend and was surprised by how much I liked it - it kept me on the edge of my seat for 90 minutes. Thus far, it is the only Oscar nominated film for 2014 I have seen - I am going to try to see some more before the awards. Which do you recommend?

Looking Forward To: The end of winter - desperately. Like many across the US, I am over this snow - well and truly over it. Fortunately, we are getting warmer temps this week and I can't wait to get out and take advantage of them.  A trip to the dog park is definitely in order - even Prince has a case of cabin fever! He can't wait to ditch these boots and the coat!

Planning : This may be my last week off work - I see the surgeon later this week and we will discuss whether or not I can return to work. I want to enjoy the week and take some time to set myself up for success when I do return to work. I will still have some diet restrictions and need to take better care of myself so achieving balance when I return to work is important.

Grateful: For the company of good friends. My friends have been great as I recovered - checking in, stopping by and sending good wishes. My online community has also been great -thanks for all your kind words and thoughts!

  1. I tried leaving a comment earlier and it doesn't look like it went through. I hope you get good news from the surgeon this week. We've had more winter than I care for this year and I so over it. We're supposed to see the 70s this week and I can't wait.

  2. Good luck with the surgeon, I hope all goes well. I just went through the first of my 2 knee surgeries and it's tough getting back in the swing of things. That didn't hamper my reading, but the snow did. I am so tired of snow! Have a great week!

  3. Glad to hear your feeling better - hope you get good news at the surgeon's this week. I've been pondering House of Cards but we just started Game of Thrones this weekend and I still want to get back to more episodes of Orange Is The New Black. Can only add so much into the mix - although we could certainly do without watching a lot of what the hubby puts on!

  4. I am so happy to hear you are well on the road to recovery, although this wan't a bad week to be cooped up inside. I like Rob Lowe's book too and I wasn't sure I would. I saw American Hustle last week and loved it- Christian Bale was phenomenal. I do have to see Gravity though. Have a great week- love the photo of Prince!

  5. Sounds like a good week. In Florida don't have to worry about winter much but hope it settles for you soon. I haven't watched House of Cards yet besides an episode or so, which I didn't enjoy much yet, will give it another chance soon.

  6. So glad you're better.
Oooo those are nice boots but you're right I'm sure he's ready to ditch them.
Yayyy! Isn't Rob awesome? I felt like he was a friend when I finished that audiobook.

  10. I want to watch House of Cards. I've heard nothing but great stuff! But if I start I'll binge watch and yikes...there will be no school work or reading done ;)

Have a great week, take good care of yourself!

  11. Glad your recovery is on track! Five Days at Memorial will probably be my next nonfiction audiobook and I've been considering getting started with House of Cards. I need to find a series both my husband and I will enjoy (although he has been very tolerant of my Downton obsession). Spring can't come soon enough for me!

  12. You should watch the original House of Cards, which was set in England. It’s so politically astute that my husband has shown scenes to his British Politics students. Marvelous acting too with lots of literary references to Macbeth. I wish you good luck with your surgeon’s appointment.

  13. I hear you on the snow. After two days in the upper thirties (yes, that is cause for celebration), I made the mistake of looking at the forecast and seeing another winter storm heading our way Thursday. With the potential for a foot of snow, which is on top of the 6 inches we got on Monday. Oy!

I'm glad you are recovering so well. Whether you go back to work or not, try to enjoy your time away from the daily grind!
